An Introduction to Biology

Biology is the complete science of living organisms and nature, covering our diverse plant and animal kingdom. This natural science comprises everything from early origins and evolution to structure, composition and function. As with other core scientific disciplines, biology can be divided into numerous categories, including microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, ecology, to name but a few.

There are said to be five fundamental, encompassing principles of biology:

  1. Cells are the basic unit of life.
  2. New species and inherited traits are the product of evolution.
  3. Genes are the basic unit of heredity.
  4. An organism will regulate its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition.
  5. Living organisms consume and transform energy.
